Real Madrid president Florentino Perez insists football clubs will be the “masters of their destiny” as it was deemed UEFA rules blocking the formation of the European Super League contravened EU law.
The Grand Chamber of the European Court of Justice had been asked to decide whether UEFA and FIFA acted against competition law by blocking the formation of a breakaway Super League in 2021 and seeking to sanction the clubs involved.
The court ruled on Thursday that the governing bodies’ rules granting prior approval for new competitions are contrary to EU law and Perez, who has remained an avid supporter of a European Super League, said “law, reason and freedom” have prevailed after the hearing.
“At Real Madrid, we welcome the decision taken by the Cour…
Juventus responded to their Serie A points deduction with a thrilling 3-3 draw against Atalanta as Danilo s inventive goal proved Ademola Lookman s brace in vain.
Juve were deducted 15 points on Friday after an investigation into past transfer dealings, which the club are expected to appeal, but battled to share the spoils at Allianz Stadium.
Arkadiusz Milik sent the Bianconeri into the break leading after Angel Di Maria cancelled out Lookman s opener, but Joakim Maehle restored parity immediately into the second half.
Lookman edged Atalanta ahead once more, but Danilo powered a smart free-kick routine home to move Juve – who were third before the punishment – into ninth.
A Wojciech Szczesny error handed Atalanta an early lead as Lookman s right-foote…
Jose Mourinho claimed his disaster years would be regarded as career high points by many bosses as he began life as head coach of Roma.
The 58-year-old rejected any suggestions he was in decline and set his sights on bringing success to the Giallorossi, his second Italian club after a highly successful two-year stint at Inter.
Sacked by Tottenham in April, Mourinho believes it could be a long rebuild at Roma, a club that last won a trophy in 2008 when they landed the Coppa Italia.
Roma s last Scudetto came in 2001 when a star-studded side pipped Juventus to the title. Mourinho has won the Italian league title since then, guiding Inter to a Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League treble in 2010.
I m a victim of what I ve done and the way people look at…
Jack Wilshere will not be playing for Arsenal again at this point, according to manager Mikel Arteta.
The 29-year-old midfielder, who made 198 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners between 2008 and 2018, is currently without a club following the expiration of his short-term deal with Bournemouth this summer. He was invited to train with Italian side Como recently but they were reportedly unable to offer him a contract due to their squad being full to the brim.
Arteta recently spoke on the subject and said that the doors would always be open to Wilshere, but speaking to the press ahead of his team s Premier League match away to Burnley on Saturday, the Spaniard clarified the club s position. He confirmed that the former England international is set to train wit…
Romelu Lukaku is on course to return to action before the end of the World Cup s group stage, according to Belgium boss Roberto Martinez, though he is unlikely to face Morocco on Sunday.
Lukaku was absent as Belgium overcame a lively Canada side 1-0 on Wednesday, having struggled with a thigh injury since returning to Inter on a season-long loan from Chelsea.
Michy Batshuayi proved a capable deputy against Canada, scoring the winner and posting a team-high tally of five shots, but Belgium s record goalscorer is making good progress in his recovery.
While Martinez is determined not to rush Lukaku back, he views Thursday s final Group F fixture against Croatia as a realistic target for the 29-year-old s comeback.
Medically, Romelu was only available for t…
Jamie Carragher was surprised by Fenway Sports Group s (FSG) announcement it would consider new investment at Liverpool, but Gary Neville believes a sale makes sense .
The Athletic reported on Monday that FSG is inviting offers for potential new owners of the Reds, although the Boston-based company later said it was fully committed to the club.
The developments came as a shock to Liverpool great Carragher, even if he understands why FSG could be willing to listen to offers.
I am surprised, Carragher said on the latest episode of Sky Sports The Overlap. How strong it is in terms of selling fully or trying to bring money into the club, I m not sure.
I just thought that with so many American owners coming into the league, I thought there was a power play i…

Neymar says all the hard work paid off as he recovered from injury to play a big part in Brazil s sublime 4-1 win over South Korea in Monday s World Cup last-16 tie.
The Paris Saint-Germain superstar missed Brazil s final two group games after sustaining an ankle injury late on in the opening 2-0 win over Serbia on November 24.
However, the 30-year-old was deemed fit enough to play 81 minutes of the one-sided contest with South Korea and scored the second of his side s goals at Stadium 974.
Neymar admits he feared the worst when suffering the injury 11 days ago and is glad to now be back on the field playing – and scoring – again.
I was very scared, he said in his post-match interview. I was doing well after a positive start to the season, so sufferi…

Federico Chiesa stunned Chelsea at the start of the second half and earned Juventus a 1-0 victory in Wednesday s Champions League Group H clash.
Chelsea failed to make their dominance of the ball count in the opening period and just 10 seconds after the restart Chiesa fired Juve in front at the Allianz Stadium.
The reigning champions continued to labour when going forward and a trio of substitutions just after the hour mark failed to spark them into life.
Juve were comfortable in seeing out a victory that handed their hopes of going into the last-16 as group winners a significant boost.
Chelsea exposed themselves to counter-attacks by giving the ball away – Chiesa flashing an effort narrowly wide after seizing upon a stray pass from Mate…
